What We Teach
The Bujinkan is a traditional set of 9 martial schools headed by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi.
Discover authentic traditional Japanese martial arts in a welcoming, friendly community at Bujinkan Manitoba. We practice effective real-world self-defense through a complete, well-rounded system that combines striking elements, grappling, joint locks, and dynamic throws.

  • Unarmed Arts: Striking, grappling, joint manipulation, and throws.
  • Traditional Weapons: Japanese sword (Kenjutsu), 6ft staff (Bojutsu), and 3ft staff (Hanbojutsu).
  • Practical Application: Effective real-world self-defense techniques.

"More than just self-defense, our training is a path to personal growth. We welcome people from all walks of life to learn practical protection skills in a supportive, ego-free environment. Whether you are looking to build confidence, get active, or study a traditional art, there is a place for you on our mats."

Our Instructor

Matt Schmidt started his training in the Bujinkan in 2007. He holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree). Matt continues to frequent seminars featuring top Bujinkan instructors from around the world. Although a skilled instructor, Matt does not hold the rank of Godan (5th Degree) and is not a Shidoshi. As such, Bujinkan Manitoba is under the tutelage of Anton Phipps to ensure high-quality instruction and to best represent the Bujinkan organization.

Our Mentor

Anton Phipps began training in Bujinkan Budo in 1998 and is based in Edmonton, Alberta. Currently, Anton tries to spend a minimum of two months a year in Japan. Anton is our mentor, and through his guidance we have access to the current training philosophies in Japan. Anton comes to Winnipeg on a frequent basis (generally 1-2 times a year), and our instructor is in constant dialogue with him. If you would like to know more about Anton, please visit his website (Bujinkan Phipps Dojo)
